Unless you were a Nineties indie-pop geek with a fondness for Bongwater records, the “Power of Pussy” may have only entered your lexicon in recent years.

It was the moment, weeks before the US election, when Donald Trump was found to have bragged on tape about grabbing women by the pussy that an inner flame was ignited among women to claim back the word. In January 2017 impassioned marches took place across America and beyond.

Pussy power was an expression first used in the Sixties by the American social activist Eldridge Cleaver to describe the way that women use their femininity and force to exert influence over men. In the months surrounding the last election of Vladimir Putin in 2012, the Russian punk protesters Pussy Riot harnessed the power to worldwide headline-making effect.

The marches and the movement have been peppered with women wearing pink hand-knitted Pussy Power hats. One even ended up in the Victoria and Albert Museum – an acknowledgement of the phrase’s place in history, and it’s acceptance into modern language.
